Techniques & Mediums
JC Barber Artworks are painted with Winton Oil paints. Every painting is made on a good quality stretched canvas or canvas board of varying sizes, using mainly a smooth canvas grain, or a rough grain on some artworks.
Every canvas is primed with a gesso, or by using some Winton titanium white oil paint mixed with a little thinner like a quality white spirit or turpentine.
Using the fat over lean technique each piece is layered. A washy paint layer is applied on the first and second coats. Thicker paint is then applied using a liquin on the middle to finished layers. Some glazes and textures are used depending on the subject or the piece overall.
The Process & Subjects
As mentioned within the technique, much of the process is to do with the layering, but splitting these layers (which can be a few to several) into three different parts. The first layer is washy and the general subject is painted roughly and quickly in less than an hour. The second part is the middle process of the painting where the painting as a whole is worked through, considering composition, light & shadow, what belongs what don’t, even more layering, blocking in, or taking out, and how the dynamics work overall, this middle part can be the longest part of the process. Lastly the third part is when the painting starts to come together as a whole new piece and the artwork is then finished within a few days to a week or two.
